The Sri Lankan Ministry of Education has announced a “National ICT Education Drive”, which is to be a key element of the Education Reforms process; a process aimed at producing a global citizen with local values who can meet the challenges of the new knowledge-based society.
The National ICT Education Drive consists of three major components:
- ICT Education for Schools
- ICT Education for Universities
- ICT Education for All
The “ICT Education for Schools” component aims at integrating ICT into the school curriculum. In introducing ICT into the school curriculum, the Ministry has developed two approaches:
- ICT as a subject.
- ICT as a tool in learning and in information management.
The second component of the National ICT Education Drive, “ICT Education for Universities”, aims to strengthen the ICT involvement in the University Education. At present information and communication technologies are used in the Computer Science and Engineering Departments. But the Ministry has noted that both ICT in non-ICT degree programmes need to improve the integration and use of ICT in teaching and learning so as to enable graduates to be more employable.
Academics representing University ICT facilities and departments recently prepared a policy framework and an action plan to improve ICT education for undergraduates. The plan involves using ICT extensively in all university teaching-learning and research.
The third component of this National Drive, “ICT Education for All”, aims to create an ICT “culture” in Sri Lanka. The Ministry aims to make 50% of the Sri Lankan population ICT-literate by the year 2010.
